Sample Resumes
Words of caution: When you're looking for an example of a good resume, remember that one size does NOT fit all! What worked well for someone else may not produce results for you at all or may actually "turn off" the employers you are hoping to reach.
Sample Resume, Cover Letter
Resume writing ideally focuses on the individual strengths and expertise of each job seeker. The sample resumes and cover letters available on this site were created for specific individuals (although names and other identifying information have been altered to protect their privacy). The resumes have previously appeared in books; all of them are provided here only as general illustrations of what can be done, not as templates on which to base other resumes. Each resume format sample should be viewed as just one of many possible choices for layout and content.
Your resume and cover letter should fit your particular needs, the challenges related to your career goals, the job market you will be targeting, and other factors that are unique to you. Whether you choose to develop your own resume or select a professional resume writer to create one for you, the result can—and probably should—turn out to be quite different from the samples included here.
What can you learn from an example of a good resume?
If you look at enough samples, one of the things you'll notice is that certain elements keep showing up, such as education and experience sections. On the other hand, some resumes might include a separate section of accomplishment highlights to emphasize a particular job seeker's contributions to employers, while others will integrate accomplishments into the experience section. The choice of what to include in your resume, as well as where and how, plays an important part in the overall presentation of your value to prospective employers.
Look also for elements you do not see in the sample resumes, such as the old ending, "References available upon request," or the generally useless phrase, "responsible for" (which only tells people what you were supposed to do, not whether you did it well—if at all).
